The Lifetime reality show, Project Runway, has always turned heads for it’s outrageous designs. Now in it’s ninth season, you might think you’ve seen everything from the twenty contestants who give it their all in the hopes of surviving one more week on the show. In each episode, new challenges are presented to the fashion designers that require them to expand on their creativity while limiting time and materials. This time, the challenge was to use materials found in Petland Discounts, a pet store in New York’s East Village.

Designers were given $300 and 30 minutes to shop for materials and told that unconventional materials and designs would certainly land them ahead of the competition. After a mad dash for dog collars, fake aquatic plants, and bird seed, Olivier Green, Bryce Black, and Cecilia Motwani concluded their shopping experience with bags of CareFresh bedding to use in their designs. We have to admit we were on the edge of our seats!

Guinea pig owners have plenty of experience with pet bedding. The soft, wrinkly bits are similar in texture and weight to homemade paper. They also come in a variety of colors. With no time to waste, the designers got down to work.

Who would have guessed they would not only successfully complete a design but a winning design! A panel of judges, including Heidi Klum, loved the “very editorial” CareFresh incorporated design by fashion designer, Olivier Green. Those familiar soft, wrinkly bits now deserve our respect as art.
