On June 9-10, 2012, adoptions will be free to qualified adopters at dozens of shelters and rescue groups in Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties.

The streets of San Francisco will be full of animals available for adoption this weekend. With children’s activities, pet products for sale, dog training demos and more, Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon Street Fair will certainly be an event you won’t want to miss.

The Adoptathon is the nation’s largest two-day adoption event and aims to raise awareness of shelter animals and their need to find loving new homes. They also wish to spotlight the amazing efforts of shelter and rescue organizations in San Francisco and neighboring counties. They’re expecting more than sixty shelters and rescues in 80 different locations throughout the weekend. There is a great interview with the founders discussing the upcoming event at KTVU.com.

“Who is this Maddie,” you might ask? Maddie was a spirited Miniature Schnauzer that “inspired her guardians to start a charitable foundation, Maddie’s Fund®, in her name,” according to Maddie’s official website. Maddie’s Fund promotes pet adoption from shelters and rescues in three bay area counties.

Even though Maddie was canine, the event isn’t limited to dogs. Cavy House Guinea Pig Rescue will be on hand promoting guinea pig adoption. You can come out and see the cavies in person on Saturday and show your support.

Animal Care & Control of San Francisco will be offering free pet adoptions to qualified adopters as will other participating shelters and rescues.

The event runs Saturday, June 9 to Sunday, June 10 at various locations throughout Alameda, Contra Costa, and San Francisco counties. For more information about this event, check out Maddie’s Matchmaker Adoptathon Street Fair’s official website or join them on Facebook.
