Wilkins Automotive Makes Way for Pet Adopt-A-Thon

Guinea Pig Today

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue's booth at the event featured Fleur and Caspian, a pair of pigs currently up for adoption, along with many other materials on proper guinea pig health and care.

Wilkins Automotive in Glen Bernie, Maryland, open its doors today to the annual Pet Adopt-A-Thon which featured local animal rescues and pet services such as groomers and pet sitters. Representatives from Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue were on hand to inform the public about guinea pig welfare and promote adoption.

The indoor/outdoor event had plenty of music, food, and drinks as everyone tried to stay cool in the 90 degree heat. Last year’s event was dodging rain so this was a welcomed change as pet lovers attempted to keep their animals happy. Some pet organizations chose to setup inside where it was air conditioned in order to keep their pets comfortable. Others were fine outdoors with the aid of a light cover for shade.

Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue had a table with guinea pig themed coloring books, calendars, and plenty of information on the proper care of cavies. “The Wilkins event was a great success today. MGPR had the space and time to make every person that wanted to talk to us feel welcomed,” says Becky Wilson of MGPR.

Also on hand at the event was Papua Piig, the World’s Most Famous Guinea Pig. Visitors had a chance to meet Papua and his pal, Decoy, and pose for pictures with him. Between sessions, Papua enjoyed lounging in his travel cage and making everyone jealous with his extreme level of comfort. You can view and download the photos of Papua with his friends on Papua’s Flickr account.

With the popularity of this summer’s blockbuster movie, The Avengers, this year’s theme was Super Heroes. Kids showed up in costume to get their faces painted and enjoy the inflatable bouncer. The raffle awarded some visitors with great prizes like a GPS unit and a Kindle. Metropolitan Guinea Pig Rescue’s own Becky Wilson snagged herself a handsome basket of treats from Harry and David.

If you missed this year’s event, there’s always next year. “The Wilkins people provide such a welcoming atmosphere and safe place for our guinea pigs that it’s hard not to have a really great time,” Becky commented. “The best events are usually the smaller events where you really have the opportunity to make an impact on people.”
